The Golden Rule

Do to others whatever you would like them to do to you. That is the essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.

Matthew 7:12

When I think about this scripture, I think about how God has given me so much grace through all the days of my life. I think about how much He loves me and how I’ve done nothing to earn it. I think about how much He not only loves me, but he loves everyone around me and that helps to give people compassion, whenever in doubt. The Golden Rule, like Jesus says represents the “essence of all that is taught in the law and the prophets.” This means to me that everything that God intended the Bible to represent, the creator of the Universe Himself, says to love one another. This is hard to do when you get into a road rage fight with someone on your way to work, or you have to give grace to your parents for being “less than perfect”, or you get into a fight or an argument with a family member because of a sensitive topic. But yes God loves those people too just like He loves you. It’s a hard one to remember, but it’s important. It’s called a Golden Rule for a reason.

Dear God,

Thank you for your Golden Rule that teaches us about compassion. I am so grateful for that rule, though we all fall less than perfect, I pray that we will learn to embrace that rule as our everyday way of seeing the world.

In your Son’s name.

Amen.
