Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.
Psalms 16:5
In the world that we live in it is easy for us to find security in things that we find tangible. Even the Israelites worshipped a golden calf after God had delivered them from slavery. As humans we were meant to worship. No matter what it is, most of have this unrest feeling to love deeply. Whether we find security in our friendships, relationships, careers, families, causes, ideologies, whatever it is seeking outside validation is something completely human. In this verse King David is speaking on how God alone is his portion and his cup, he makes his lot secure. When I think about the meaning of the word lot, I think about a territory that belongs to someone. To me this means my atmosphere or experiences around me. I love that King David is saying that it is his portion and cup that make his lot (atmosphere or experiences) secure. For those who don’t know, King David could not find his security in anything or anyone but God when he wrote this. He was trapped and being hunted by King Saul to be killed. As he found himself in these trying times he sang praises to God and now we have these verses in book of Psalms centuries later.
What I find interesting about King David’s journey is that he was cornered and forced to find his security in God. There are many times in life when we too can feel forced in a corner. Sometimes it’s not that there aren’t people surrounding us, but maybe God is isolating us. There are times when we can find ourselves in situations, where our “lot” does not look how we wanted it to, or how we planned. We too can find ourselves in a corner, and again it’s not because of the lack of people who care, maybe we do have people who care, but maybe it’s because of a lack of understanding. Sometimes a lack of understanding from others can make us feel alone. It’s important to get into community when you’re in those situations, although I’m aware that God can isolate us for a reason, it can be detrimental for your mental health if you’re not consistently surrounding yourself with good people who love you. However, we have to be aware that God is always our cup and our portion. Whether you feel misunderstood, or you are in the a season of isolation, let’s remember that God is our portion and our cup. From God we can receive wisdom, direction, and peace. Most importantly, from God we receive the love we need to give to others and to ourselves. We can love and accept ourselves, but God loves and accepts us, however that means we must be willing to let God be that cup in our lives. So if you are feeling you are in a place of lack today, remember that God is our cup and portion, He is enough for us. He always has been and always will be. We only have to remember to place him in that rightful place in our hearts.
Dear God,
May you peacefully rest your cup in our hearts today. May You and your love be enough for us today and always.
In Jesus’s Name.
Amen.
Have a blessed week ahead of you!
