What does it mean to eat as a vegan? What does it mean to live as a "vegan"?

Okay so eating Vegan actually is really simple. Whether you call it “plant-based” “vegan” “mostly vegan” “etc. etc. etc.” eating vegan is very simple. It means abstaining from using any animal products.

When I say animal products I mean:

  • eggs (coming from any animal)
  • milk (coming from any animal)
  • cheese (coming from any animal)
  • meat (coming from any animal)
  • seafood
  • clams too

So what’s the difference between Vegan and Vegetarian?

Vegetarians eat milk, eggs, and cheese, vegans do not.

Some people will use the term “vegan” because they are doing it for the animals, and some people use the term “plant based” because they don’t want to scare of “meat eaters.” I think that it really just depends on what resonates with you. I choose to call myself a “vegan” because I went for it because of ethical reasons, however I have and do at times eat foods with milk in it. I used to abstain from it completely, but I had a change of heart over the year after I became a Christian. I still believe in the vegan movement and abstaining from using animal products as much as possible, but I do have to admit that I will indulge in sweets or foods that may have animal products at times. Still, I will buy only vegan foods because I also believe in basic capitalism we vote with our dollar. And since I became a vegan in 2015 I have seen the vegan/ plant based industry just explode as people are becoming more and more conscious of our choices for the animals, our health, and the planet.

So eating vegan is simple, just eat foods that abstain from animal products.

If you live in the DMV area, here are some restraunts for you to check out that all vegan, or mostly vegan places that have great options and will statisfy your “meat eating” tendencies! Going to these places instead of the your regular go to may help open your mind to amazing vegan tasting options, also if you’re ready to take that leap of faith into veganism then these are definitely some places to check out!

These are just a few options, but honestly you can go to MANY restraunts and they will have vegan options these days.. I’ll give a few examples of where I go to regularly:

  • Chipotle (Chipotle is my jammmm!)
  • Cava
  • Pho (call and make sure that they have vegetarian pho)
  • Sushi places (just order the veggie rolls!)
  • Thai food places (pad thai & drunken noodles is amazing! Just make sure to ask without fish sauce)
  • Pupusas!! (Yes pupusas, hope you don’t mind though we’re not hip yet to making pupusas with vegan cheese, though I have had them before by a friend’s mom and they were bomb of course!, but just ask the pupusas places with NO CHEESE, they’re just as satisfying if you’re vegan for the animals in my opinion 😉 )
  • Chinese Restaurants
  • Ethiopian Food
  • Indian Food
  • Mexican places
  • Dunkin Donuts (they have a beyond meat breakfast sausage)
  • Burger King (they have the impossible burger! *ask for no cheese or mayo*)

All of the decisions that you make are making an impact into what kind of world we want to see tomorrow. So if you want to see a cleaner, more peaceful, sane, animal friendly, and environmentally healthy planet let’s make an effort and take those steps!

So these are some of the common places that you can go to for some vegan options. If you have any questions or suggestions please let me know!
