I’ve observe everything going on under the sun, and really, it’s all meaningless- like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 1:14
Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado
At first glance the thought of this verse seems a little depressing. Everything is meaningless.. if everything is meaningless then nothing is truly meaningful, sure that sounds morbid, but let me give you some context. The book of Ecclesiastes is written by King Solomon. This book is found in the old testament part of the bible before Jesus and it’s written by someone who is known as the wisest man who ever lived. King Solomon was the son of King David who reigned in Israel for 40 years. After King David’s passing, King Solomon was next to reign and asked God for wisdom over riches or power and because of this God blessed him with everything he wanted and more. King Solomon was the man who had it all, wisdom, money, power, and apparently lots of women. However he came to the point in his life when realized that everything was meaningless to him. I encourage you to read the book of Ecclesiastes where he breaks it down even further, but the point is that he realized that life is fleeting and to be happy is more important than to be stressed or worried about things we try so hard to accomplish or things we can’t control. In the book of Ecclesiastes chapter 3 verse 22 he says, “So I saw that there is nothing better than for people to be happy in their work. That is why we are here!” This got me thinking about my life and life in general.
In this day and age most people in most places around the world are all trying so hard to be the best, accomplish more, and have all we can get. We might worry about our future or things that we can’t control. Currently it’s the election season in the U.S. and people are in division between these two politicians. Yet God already knows the outcome. He already knows who will win and what will happen. I believe as believers we should be praying for wisdom and guidance on the future and for whoever is elected. Sure it’s a big deal on who our next president will be, but it should not be a reason for division. Of course our future and accomplishing things are important, but it should never take away our peace or our joy. Like Solomon said everything is meaningless- like chasing the wind.
The picture above was taken on the Trail Ridge Road Scenic Drive at the Rocky Mountains, Colorado. As I was driving up this road my body started to react to the elevation, but once we made to the top, of course the views were breath taking. As I was up there I meditated on the feeling that I wanted to stay there and somehow make that moment last. I thought about how I strived to be like the mountains that are strong and at ease, like God who is always strong and at ease. Yet, I’m not a mountain, and my body was definitely ready to go back to my normal level of elevation where I my life is actually happening. Yes, staying at the top of a mountain though sounds amazing, is not attainable and it is like chasing the wind. However, having a relationship with God can bring us to a place within ourselves where we feel at peace. While we worry or fret about our future as a normal human reaction thing we do, God is still with us strong and at ease. This scripture from the man who had it all reminds me that even though things are important to us, at the end it’s important to remember that all things will past. There will be a different president, different issues, different problems, different challenges, it’s meaningless yes. So let’s try to let go and trust God in our todays. Let’s remember to be happy with what we have. Let’s also remember to take a break when we’re stressed striving for things and remember at the end of that day, it’s not that serious. Let’s not chase the wind, but instead trust in our Heavenly Father who is always at peace and reminding us to be at peace well. Let’s trust Him.
